How To Be Of Earthly Good

“Set your minds on things above, not on things on the earth.” Colossians 3:2 NKJV
Picture Frame One day I overheard one Christian say to another, “Don’t be so heavenly minded that you’re of no earthly good.” The speaker probably didn’t realize that a Christian can’t be of earthly good unless he is heavenly minded. The above verse tells us that our minds should be on heavenly things, because that’s where our Head, hope, home, and help are. With all that is ours in heaven, why would we want our minds to be anywhere else? And with all that we have at our disposal, can we possibly believe that bringing a little of heaven into this sad world would be of no earthly good?

When we have our minds on things above, and are able to share a bit of “the mind of Christ” (1 Cor. 2:16) with those around us, we are truly His “ambassadors,” communicating to those in need exactly what they do need (2 Cor. 5:20). After all, the Lord Jesus brought from heaven the greatest good that any man can ever acquire on earth – His wonderful salvation.

When He came, He brought heavenly light to a world full of darkness. He brought heavenly truth to a world full of deception. He brought the heavenly road map to a people who had lost their way. He brought new life to those who were dead in sin. Could anyone possibly say that bringing this kind of heavenly-mindedness to the world is of no earthly good?

We are reminded to “let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.” Why? So that, like humble and obedient bondservants, our like-mindedness will let our Savior’s light shine forth to others through us (Phil. 2:5-8). God really does want our heavenly-mindedness to be of earthly good. But it can only be so if we present it His way.
